Important News about Drupal Themes

Scratch

The purpose of this theme is that it can be used to start a new theme from, eeehh, well… scratch.
So the theme itself is as empty as can be. That way there is no need to remove everything every time a new theme has to be developed.
All blocks that can be placed in a region are removed from the page-template. Only the standard regions are available.
In the CSS only the positioning of the regions is done, in a way that a lot of projects will probably use. This way the site remains usable (although that is not the first purpose of this theme, I found this a very small compromise as the CSS for this is very light).

A second purpose for this theme is that now you can finally see in a glimpse what has been styled by Drupal core and the various modules. Than you can decide if and how to overwrite that. There are of course very sofisticated tools to dissect the CSS of a site (Firebug, Xyle Scope) but this is a very lightweight and simple solutions without the need to dig deep into the code.

960 Robots

960 Robots is a theme created by Lullabot for its Drupal theming videos and DVDs. This theme, based on the 960 grid system, features two columns on the right side of the page, a two-column footer, calandar-page dates for posts, and real-name usernames in posts (requires profile field with the machine name "profile_real_name"). The theme also uses Twitter's search API to display a random message based on a configurable search string as the site's slogan (PHP5 required).

You can watch this theme being built as Drupal's theming concepts are explained in Lullabot's Theming Basics (available now) and Advanced Theming (coming soon) DVDs and downloadable video.

A demo site is available. As well as a complete Drupal distribution of the code, configurations, and database used to create the site used in the videos.

Aquanaut

Aquanaut is a fixed-width, standards based theme that employs the color module for customization. The theme uses two columns along with header and footer regions. The left column is broken down into header and content regions, where the right column provides a gradient-filled region and another lower region without a background fill color. There are also standard header and footer regions.

The color module allows you to select a main background color, a gradient for the top-right region, text and link colors.

Another fun addition is the colorable Druplicon as the default site logo.

New in 1.4!

  • An adjustable width right-column

Installation Notes

  • To adjust the width of the right column, simple click the configure link for aquanaut in /admin/build/themes
  • To use the dev version check out from HEAD or use the 6.x-1.x-dev version.
  • Since it doesn't use a "left" column, you might have to administer your blocks after enabling the theme to make things look correct
  • There still may be some quirks here and there, so drop a line in the issue queue if you see any problems :)
